[edit] Star Ranking
Each battle will earn the player a ranking of one to three stars.
- 1 star - received for participating in a battle that ends in defeat for the player.
- 2 stars - received for winning a battle, satisfying the published conditions.
- 3 stars - received for winning a battle and satisfying the published and secret conditions.
Stars can only be earned once. For example, if you earn two stars in a battle and fight it again, satisfying only the published conditions, you will not receive two more stars. However, if you fight again and satisfy the secret condition, you will receive an additional star for the battle, escalating your rank to three stars.
Stars can be exchanged for prizes by talking to Prize Exchanger Gleg. For every five stars earned, a new prize will become available.
[edit] The Light Class Battles
There are five battles in this set:
[edit] The Kelolon Battalion
The stars of the Backyard, the Kelolon battalion, send the Three Brothers into the fight!
Defeat the three Kelolon brothers.
Conditions:
- Defeat all enemies
Secret Condition:
- Allow the kelolon to perform "Combination" three or more times.
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoliers)
- Assemble a team of tank characters for your front line and have two magic users that are versitile in Black and White magic on your back line. In particular, the magic users should be equipped with Dispel, All-Shield/All-Shieldus, All-Barricade, strong healing spells, and Grounda/Groundus. Your front line should be equipped with Guard, but avoid Counter and its ilk.
- Begin the battle by having your non-magic users defend and have your magic users cast All-Shield and All-Barricade. Allow the Kelolon to attack. The will usually perform a Combination on the first turn and every other turn thereafter.
- Continue defending with your sword and gun characters and healing as necessary with your magic users until the Kelolon have performed Combination three times. Pay attention to the spells they are casting -- Forceus applied to the center Kelolon can cause severe damage during a Combination. Whenever you see Forceus cast, Dispel it with your magic users.
- Once three Combinations have occured, you may begin attacking. The battle should end very quickly at this point if you have all of your front line attack a single Kelolon and have your magic users cast Grounda on the remaining two.
[edit] The Festival of Magic
A three-way magical rumble for two! This awesome double act is ready to take you on!
Three-way battle against two Kelo-Sisters (Kelolina?) and two Wise Men.
Conditions:
- Up to 2 PCs
- Defeat all enemies
- Attacks are not allowed
- Skills are not allowed
- Items are not allowed
Secret Condition:
- Defeat all enemies yourself -- do not allow any of the other contestants get a kill.
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoilers)
- Choose your two best Black Magic users for this battle and be sure to equip them with Grounda or Groundus. (Grounda should be sufficient at Level 40.)
- At the start of the battle, cast Grounda on each of the Wise Men. The are the most aggressive toward the Kelolon, so you want to take them out of the battle immediately. You should be able to take both out in your first turn.
- On your second turn, target the Kelolon, again with Grounda. They should both go down immediately, ending the battle.
- NOTE: If you are casting Groundus it may require more than a single turn to set up. The key to getting three stars on this battle is to take out one side or the other immediately, so Grounda is preferred and should be sufficient if you are reasonably leveled up.
[edit] Pure Gluttony
Welcome to the Explosive Bugs' banquet. To the swift go the spoils!
Defeat two Explosive Bugs, supported by an endless supply of Magic Insects.
Conditions:
- Defeat both Explosive Bugs
Secret Condition:
- Allow the Explosive bugs to eat(or use prey) on at least 3 of the little bugs each.
[edit] Two Eyeballs
A mechanical eye and monster eye team up for trouble! The terrors of teamwork!
Defeat a single Evil Eye supported by a Cyclops and an unlimited suppy of White Dogs.
Conditions:
- Win within 10 turns
- Defeat the Evil Eye
Secret Condition:
- Defeat five or more White Dogs during the course of the battle.
[edit] Puppet Master
It's a real problem that he recklessly controls everyone he sees. Give him a slap on the wrist.
Defeat three Puppet Masters supported by two Controlled Ones.
Conditions:
- Defeat the Puppet Master
- Spare the Controlled One
Secret Condition:
- Both Controlled Ones must survive. (NOT VERIFIED)
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoilers)
- NOTE: The author of this strategy earned three stars on this battle without knowing the secret condition. The following strategy assumes that both Controlled Ones must survive to satisfy the secret condition. The strategy may need to be altered once the secret condition has been documented.
- Use a standard battlefield lineup of three sword/gun characters, a Black Magic user and a White Magic user. The front line should be equipped with Guard, but be advised that Counter and its ilk is not recommended for this battle. Also, two of your front line should have Cut Down equipped. Equipping rings with the Magic Killer enhancement is advised.
- Begin the battle by using Cut Down on the enemies' front line to reduce their GC. Be mindful that you want to keep both Controlled Ones alive, so don't over-do it. Have all of your other characters attack a single Puppet Master.
- Continue having all of your characters fight the Puppet Masters, picking them off one at a time. The Puppet Masters have no elemental affinity, so use your most powerful Black Magic against them, but avoid magic and skills that have an area effect that might harm the Controlled Ones. (Avoid spells like Prism and Shadow.)
- The battle will end as soon as all of the Puppet Masters have been defeated.
Note: The secret condition for any battle in this set can be learned from Informant Zelen after receiving the Backyard Guide for Beginners from Receptionist Bormis. Once a battle has been won by satisfying the secret condition, Zelen will no longer divulge it, responding "The battle bonus was claimed long ago, my friend. No point asking about it now, huh?"
