[edit] Star Ranking
Each battle will earn the player a ranking of one to three stars.
- 1 star - received for participating in a battle that ends in defeat for the player.
- 2 stars - received for winning a battle, satisfying the published conditions.
- 3 stars - received for winning a battle and satisfying the published and secret conditions.
Stars can only be earned once. For example, if you earn two stars in a battle and fight it again, satisfying only the published conditions, you will not receive two more stars. However, if you fight again and satisfy the secret condition, you will receive an additional star for the battle, escalating your rank to three stars.
Stars can be exchanged for prizes by talking to Prize Exchanger Gleg. For every five stars earned, a new prize will become available.
[edit] The Middle Class Battles
There are five battles in this set:
[edit] Poor Little Kelolon
Save the Kelolon couple from the evil rampaging Wild Balls
Defeat the three Wild Balls (Wind, Fire and Earth Elementals) before they kill the Kelolon Papa.
Conditions:
- Defeat all the Wild Balls
- Don't defeat the Kelolon Papa
Secret Condition:
- Both the Kelolon Papa and Kelolon Mama must survive. (Water spells will restore their health.)
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoilers)
- This is a simple battle. Assemble a full team of five characters, favoring magic users. On the opening turn cast your highest opposing spells on each of the Wild Balls: Cast Flara/Flarus on Wind, Winda/Windus on Earth and Aquara/Aquarus on Fire. The battle should be over in a single turn.
- Do not attack the Kelolon. If the battle does extend beyond the first turn and the Kelolon are hurt, you can safely cast Aqua/Aquara/Aquarus on them to restore their health.
[edit] Art of Inner Sight
There are things that cannot be seen, but must be felt.
Handicap battle against a King Owl and five Insectors. Player characters have blind and seal status effects at the outset. These status effects will remain in effect for the entire battle and cannot be relieved through items, skills or accessories.
Conditions:
- Defeat all enemies
- Dark status
- Seal status
Secret Condition:
- "Even if you are blinded, you can still hear their wing beats. Try aiming for those first."
- From this clue you can assume that you must kill the King Owl first.
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoilers)
- Assemble a team of players who do not use magic staves: Kaim, Sed, Seth, Tolten and Mack. (The Seal condition makes magic users useless in this battle.) Equip as many of them as you can with rings having the Aerial Killer enhancement. Make sure that your front line characters have Guard and Counter equipped. Also, equip accessories or skills as you can to nullify poison. Also, ensure that at least two of your characters are able to perform the Cut Down skill.
- At the start of the battle, you have two goals: reduce the enemies' GC and take down the King Owl before the Insectors. Use Cut Down judiciously to reduce the front line's GC without killing any of the Insectors. Have all other characters concentrate their efforts on the King Owl.
- Even though your characters are blinded, which accounts for the high frequency of misses, the Areal Killer enhancement should help you take down the King Owl quickly -- two or three rounds for a team averaging Level 40.
- Once the Owl has been taken down, grind on the Insectors until they have all been taken out. Here again, Cut Down may be useful -- it doesn't inflict as much damage as a direct attack, but it will almost always cause damage to half the front line. You will find that Counter comes in handy here as well, since most counter attacks will not miss.
- A Level 40 team should be able to finish this battle in no more than eight turns.
[edit] Revenge! The Mantalas' Return!
The big catch was caught in Saman. Fight him while he's fresh!
Battle against the Mantalas supported by four Mantas.
Conditions:
- Defeat the Mantalas
Secret Condition:
- "Make sure you beat them before everyone in your party gets KO'd. They've got a killer counterattack, so hit 'em with your magic instead."
- This clue either indicates that the condition is to have all of your team survive or that only magic attacks should be used. The strategy below assumes the latter.
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoilers)
- Set up your party with only magic users: Jansen, Ming, Sarah and Cooke. Make sure that all of the black magic users have Grounda or Groundus equipped. It wouldn't hurt to equip anti-poison and anti-petrify accessories/skills if you have them available.
- At the beginning of the battle, have all of your black magic users cast Grounda/Groundus on the Mantalas. Ignore the Mantas -- you only need to defeat the Mantalas to claim victory. Have Cooke cast All-Shield/All-Shieldus.
- Continue attacking the Mantalas with earth spells until it is defeated. A Level 40 team should be able to finish this battle in two turns. Congratulations! Three stars are yours.
[edit] Against All Odds
He seems to have a bone to pick with Uhra. Time to teach him a lesson.
Tolten faces a single Delinquent Soldier.
Conditions:
Secret Condition:
- "That guy doesn't use status ailments much in combo attacks. It'd be best to switch out your equipment for offense and defense. Don't do something cowardly like healing yourselves with items or magic. That's borderline cheating."
- The clue is telling us to carefully select our accessories for this battle, because satisfying the secret condition means not healing Tolten with items or magic during the battle. Grin and bear it, Golden Boy!
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoilers)
- This is a difficult battle. The Delinquent Soldier has a poison laced attack and also uses Forcea.
- Equip Tolten's best sword (the author used the Royal Knight's Sword), it's accompanying ring, and either the Antidote Brooch accessory or the Talisman accessory. While Talisman's effects are more random than Antidote Brooch, we found it was the less nerve-wracking option. You might also consider the Warrior's Armband or Mimint Ear.
- This is a battle of pure attrition. Attack with the Break Hit skill until Tolten runs too low on MP to use it. If you are able, use Power Hit after that until Tolten's MP is fully depleted. From there on out use attacks. Do not use any healing items or you will not get all three stars for this battle.
- The enemy uses Forcea quite a bit, often twice in a single turn. If you equipped Talisman, chances are that you will get healed by his attacks about as often as you get hurt, so this battle really just becomes a slugfest until the enemy is defeated. You GC will continually go down, but your health should be more than adequate throughout the battle.
- Defeat the Soldier without healing and you will earn yourself three more stars.
[edit] Fireworks Night
Exploding Balloons are like a work of art!
Destroy five Balloons.
Conditions:
- Defeat all enemies
Secret Condition:
- "There's a way you can blow them all away at once, you know. Try roasting 'em alive with fire."
- The clue is suggesting that we need to get all of the balloons to explode at the same time and that we can trigger that somehow with Fire-based spells.
Strategy: (CAUTION: Possible spoilers)
- These enemies all have Fire affinity, but ignore your natural impulse to douse them with Water element spells. Balloons will set themselves up to explode during the next turn if they are hit by any kind of fire spell.
- To set this battle up for three stars, gather together any five characters that are able to cast Flare. The author used Kaim, Seth, Sarah, Jansen and Ming.
- On the first turn have each PC cast Flare on a different Balloon. It is important that you use Flare and not Flara or Flarus -- all five spells must be cast within the same turn. As each balloon is ignited, it will perform the skill Flare Mine, setting itself up for Huge Explosion on the next turn.
- On the second turn, if you did everthing correctly, have everyone defend and watch the fireworks!
- An alternative method is available if you have a character that is able to perform All-Flare. Set up as before, only substitute Cooke for one of the magic users. On the first turn have everyone defend except Cooke and the user with All-Flare. Have the magic user cast All-Flare and have Cooke use her Casting Support skill. This will cause all of the balloons to be ignited at once. As with the first method, have all PCs defend on the second turn, sit back and enjoy the show!
Note: The secret condition for any battle in this series can be learned from Informant Zelen after receiving the Backyard Daily. Once a battle has been won by satisfying the secret condition, Zelen will no longer divulge it, responding "The battle bonus was claimed long ago, my friend. No point asking about it now, huh?"
